Preppy comes from “prep school” students. Which is a really expensive school that requires neat uniforms. Hence the plaid, loafers, collared shirts, expensive stuff etc. these new kids got it all wrong.

This is basically the conversation I have with my Gen Z teenagers (THEY HAVE NO IDEA). I also come from the 90's version of preppy with rugby shirts, sweater vests, and loafers, but I see you, 2006 preppy.
Edited to add: my younger Gen Z kids told me "what's preppy" based on what they have seen. Never fear my darling Gen Z folks: we know Gen alpha doesn't understand. And my sweet Gen alphas, you, too, will roll your eyes at the kids younger than you. But we love all generations.

It’s giving more vsco/soft girl than anything but I feel you. Preppy 2024 is more like a pleated skirt with an oversized sweater with a collared top underneath, long socks or stockings with dress shoes or chunky sneakers… like college girl attire, think “Clueless” 1995 but add fake freckles and a ton of jelly blush basically.

When I was in middle school in the late 2000s, preppy was basically defined as Hollister and Abercrombie lol. The adjective preppy got turned into the noun "prep" and basically became synonymous with being popular. We called the popular kids at school "the preps" and hated them lol
