Do Gravettian Venus figurines like the Venus of Willendorf represent real women? If life was hard during the ice age, how did they eat enough food to look like this? Where did they get their calories?

Thereā€™s an interesting study which showed that the farther South you go, the slimmer the Venus figurines get. Maybe because in warmer climates, extra weight would be less valued

In Cherokee culture, the comment "you have a fat wife" is a compliment of the highest order. It basically says, "You are a good provider for your family."

A misconception we often have is that before agriculture, we were starving. But there's always animals to hunt, all year round and tribes followed the food. When for agriculture, it was only yielding results once or twice a year. We actually see on the bones the difference between hunter gatherers and sedentary agricultural people

I also heard a theory that these are self portraits, they are "off" because the only way these woman could see themselves would be looking down at their body, or looking down at their reflection in a body of water/ice. It skews the perspective. I've done a few sketches of myself this way, it's interesting
Edit: would also explain why they don't typically have faces

An interesting theory my mother shared were that these were self portraits of women-- mainly women after giving birth. She said that she looked down at her body after giving birth and it looked exactly the same.

There is also a possibility it was a symbolic figurine representing fertility and prosperity more than a person
Edit: It could be both based on a real person and have symbolic intent
