It ended up costing me about $200 in materials but one way I saved $$ was by buying long whole dowels (I used 3/4") and cutting them in half since apparently half-round dowels are even more expensive than a whole dowel, even though its half the amount of material! My table was 30" round x 18" high and I think I used about 11 8' x 3/4" dowels at about $8.50/dowel.
I also got my table top for $5 from a garage sale, but if you're not able to find one on your local buy and sell, you can also use plywood (I recommend baltic birch or maple as they both stain nicely).
