It starts from Pratipada (day 1) till Mahalaya Amavasya (day 16). These 16 days are dedicated to all the ancestors who have passed away. During these days, we perform rituals like Puja, Daan, and Tarpan, and our ancestors shower us with blessings for health, wealth, marital happiness, and knowledge.
To decide which time to do Puja for your ancestors, follow these simple rules-
1. Immediate ancestors: Those who have passed within 1 year, the 4th day and 5th day i.e., Chaturthi and Panchami is the tithi dedicated to them.
2. Ancestors who had more than 1 year: The tithi at which they passed away, i.e., the tithi of their death anniversary is dedicated to them.
3. Ancestors who have passed in accidents/wars/violent deaths: Chaturdashi (14th Day) of Pitri Paksha is dedicated to them.
4. If the wife has passed before the husband: Navami tithi is dedicated to them.
5. For all ancestors irrespective of their time/or those who don’t know the tithis of their ancestors: Amavasya of pitripaksha is dedicated to them.
