This matches what the prophet SAW referred to when he was talking about future Muslims being exploited because of their fear of death. Every time a new caliphate was attempted, the greed of leaders made it impossible to decide who. Overconfidence is not the reason. The first major reason is geography and the second less important reason is religion. Europe is mountainous and has easy access to the sea. Meaning it is almost set up for both defending (mountains) and invading (sea access). The mountains made inter-independence very easy. Rival and competing European kingdoms could barely conquer each other. So they were forced organically to seek total technological and economic advantage to overpower one another for prolonged wars sometimes taking a century for a single war before 1 was conquered. While on the steppes or in the desert, only some advantage is needed to conquer all. There is less need to build up the society economically and technological to such heights.
