The version of cookie dough used commercially in ice cream etc doesn't have eggs, and adds a chewy texture. I do think it's inspired by the common childhood past time of licking the spoon when baking (usually small amounts of leftover batter) 😂

If you grew up with someone who baked a lot you probably dipped you finger in the cake batter or ate the cookie dough before you where old enough to think it as unsafe of gross and you got to lick the spoon for helping out. Pretty sure that's how it originally started. Caesar salad dressing and eggnog also have raw eggs in it no one complains about those things but yeah im not eating plain raw egg on something or raw meat or fish lol

You're not wrong. I love cookie dough, though. I like it better than cookies. Cookie dough ice cream is one of my favorite flavors.

Generally speaking, we DON'T eat cookie dough. We don't set out to make a bowl of cookie dough, specifically to eat it, and when we do, we don't put the egg in it, but if we're making cookies to bake, we might take a spoonful of it.
"Cookie dough ice cream," for example, has no egg in it.

I will never eat raw from scratch but a lot of store bought cookie dough has pasteurized eggs and is safe to eat raw. I love that stuff.

Lots of people eat raw eggs in the states. Especially if you're a gym-bro. Protein shake additive.

Why people do it? It became a thing to do,to taste the batter, like tasting the food during the cooking process. It caught on. Not many people make cookie dough just to eat. Plus the raw egg in cookie dough isn’t detected in the taste.

Some of the people in the comments don't know that Americans DID used to snack on cookie dough with the eggs in it. They started to change it when people got sick and complained about it to avoid lawsuits.

someone started baking cookies and decided to eat some of the dough and realized it tasted better than the actually cookies. It is also an amazing topping for ice-cream.
