I used to work for Apple in two of their stores as a salesperson. I love tech, but their pricing policies (ie, greed) turned me off to them. I now own zero Apple products, and won't change that until Tim Apple is gone...

I definitely had this issue when buying one. I didn't want lightning, and I didn't want the old pencil, which needed lightning, and thus you are already in Air and Pro territory. Then you get screen quality etc as well.
Ended up getting a second hand pro 12.9 M1 for a 1000 with 1tb storage, magic keyboard and pencil. Very expensive, but also amazing device.
Still my first and only Apple device, and have zero plans to add more.
