This is a USAIRWAYS flight 35,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean in route from Phoenix to Maui on September 17, 2010. The 175 passengers were 4 hours into the flight, 2 hours from land. Passengers are in a smoke filled cabin with alarms sounding off. This was a terrifying experience for all. Our plane made an emergency landing at SFO two hours after the smoke started.

The oxygen masks in the cabin do not protect from toxic smoke, just provide extra oxygen if a pressure leak occurs at high altitude. The pilots oxygen masks on the other hand do protect from toxic smoke and come from a separate oxygen tank isolated from the rest of the cabin. Flight crew do have portable oxygen masks but they only last around 10/20mins.

Apparently an oil cap in one of the engine fell off and as a result the oil burned a bit and produced a lot of smoke.

the smoke was actually toxic fumes, significantly for hazardous for the health of both the crew and passengers.

Holy crap! 2 hours is a long damn time to sit in a smoked filled plane. I would have lost my mind! Did you ever find out what caused it?

I was on Us Airways 432 just a month before this happend. August 9th 2010. Did they ever find out the cause? I hope everyone was well compensated.

Did you get any compensation by US-Airways for this incident? Could US-Air quickly organize another airplane to bring you to Hawaii?

what is the cause of the smoke? Because it has to come from somwhere?

Pilot oxygen masks come from a pressurized oxygen cylinder, and is the pure oxygen. Passenger masks mix cabin air with oxygen converted from a chemical reaction, therefore passenger masks do not help at all when there is smoke in the cabin.

Lol, yeah. 2 hrs in smoke would have made me think twice about going back onto an airplane. D:

There would be no point dropping the masks to help in this situation, as they are only used in the even of a decompression. The supply of oxygen from these masks only last 12-15 minutes. They will have set procedures to follow in the event of a smoke filled cabin. Such as adjusting the cabin altitude level to help increase air flow rate through the cabin to help remove some of the smoke or fumes.

Wrong, on July 28 2010 an Airblue A321 crashed in Pakistan killing all 152 passengers and crew. I have been on this very flight, US Airways 432, PHX-OGG and it is a Boeing 757 used on the route, not an A321.

smoke in the plane and nothing but water below lmao

@MultiTorte The masks are no good in a smoke filled cabin, as they provide a mix of cabin air and oxygen. They would not filter out the smoke, plus, introducing oxygen when there may be a fire on-board is not a good idea.

we know who to blame. we blame the airlines maintenance for not properly fixing on one of the Caps on an oil tank on that aircraft. SO you are WRONG
