The Captain of that plane, was cool under pressure. He was brave, courageous, and Saved everyone's life. I hop he got recognition.

In my 54 years I wonder how I never heard of this before. It’s one of the most amazing stories of aviation history.

Back in '50s - '70s, Coast Guard had Cutters patrolling 4 areas In the Atlantic and two areas in the Pacific. Patrol areas were "boxes", 210 mile ×'210 miles. Wevprovided navigational aid to aircraft and trans-oceanic ship traffic. Also search and rescue, hydrographic measurements, "weather balloon" observations and communications support. Plus other assigned tasks. The average Cutter spent a year alternating between a month in port for maintenance and a month at sea, on patrol. Stormy weather brought "mountainous seas" right up close and personal.

This happened to my mother and I in 1953 on a Pan Am Clipper. We were only a few miles from Hawaii though. The US Navy rescued us. Our plane didn't sink. It floated. I was only two at the time. So the details were forgotten years ago. I never knew this happened more than once until I seen this.

The airplane orbited until daylight; and in the meantime, the crew moved everyone forward, knowing the tendency of the tail to separate during ditching. The crew had everyone well prepared for the ditching.

I had not heard of this before. This was a terrific example of good pilots and great Navy personnel.

The pilots and crew were obviously amazing.

This was such a success because in the time it took for the plane and the ship to meet up, both the staff on the plane and on the ship wasted not a minute in anticipating every possible outcome and planning for it. This success was a triumph of analysis and preparation.

Some years later I served with the former Captain of the Pontchartrain, he had made movies of this event and we all had to watch. He went on to captan other CG vessels including one of the wind class icebreakers and the HEC Chase. He was an expert Trumpet player and often woke the crew by playing reveille on the ships PA system.
