Happy new year Dean. The issue is condensation. The space between the roof deck and the insulation needs to be ventilated or condensation will form on the wrap side and rot the timbers. So a solution is either to vent the space or install a vapour control membrane.

A few vents in the side of the void will provide cross ventilation and be cheaper than a vapour barrier.

Might have some timber left over from a site I am running. Roof rebuild so rafters and hips. If we do have any left over I will let you know and see if I can get the timber to you

The only way you are going to be able to fix that without removing the roof is by fitting new beams alongside the rotten ones before removing them.

"OH Bugger" 😒 just such has had me dithering about insulatiing myself and balancing costs/ ventilation etc etc. I'd second comments above suggesting retro-fitting secondary beams alongside the existing- reclaimed 2nd hand timbers.... tho they aren't cheap either.... crappitycrapcrap

Is rot caused by a leak or condensation? If it leaks then it may be covered by home insurance.
I'm not sure about that insulation, I know it's cheap and easy but its uses are very are limited. I lined my shed with 25mm Celotex, kingspan type stuff a few years ago. I had little money so I did it a bit at a time. It was so worth it, I put an electric oil filled electric heater on for a short period before I go out ( Alexa helps 😉) then I can maintenan that heat in my 4mx3m building for hours and the heater only kicks in now and again to maintain 19c. I now working way round lining with 9mm MDF a lot use OSB often reclaimed stuff. I've seen some heat their shop with a Chinese diesel heater, they are powerful and make no fumes Indoor, very cheap to run and buy...... especially if you know someone who has access to red Deisel😉
Sorry for going off topic but cold really was a reason to not go out as it was not good for my fibro pain. This may not make sense as I wrote it while experiencing chronic fatigue and my thoughts are muddle

Sod of a job.!
As others have commented.......
1) cause= condensation
2) solution = ventilation
3) repair = slide newer timbers along side rotten.

Can’t help with how to fix the issue but I came back from visiting family today and my workshop is currently sporting multiple puddles and my tools and workbench are soaking wet.

I know this doesn’t help you but just know I feel your pain

Didn't you mention that you rent the property? Surely this is a landlord fix, rather than a tenant? I appreciate they may not want to rectify if not falling down, etc. But maybe you could offer to help with some of the work to alleviate their concerns?
