I recently discovered a type of glass called Superfest, and I think it's pretty cool. Years ago when it was made, it was called a nearly indestructible glass, and now I want to test that.

The glass is made with the same technology behind Gorilla Glass. The general idea is to exchange the smaller sodium ions that are on the surface of the glass, with larger potassium ions. This increases the pressure between the core of the glass and the surface, meaning the glass has to bend more before it will break. This also makes it less likely to scratch, which is the benefit to phone screens.

A minute of silence for the glass, the dish, the round bottle, the beaker, and the (nearly) indestructible glass.

That glass is an east-germany invention.
Today it's known as gorilla glass.
The company went bankrupt, nobody wanted to resell them.

One reason it shattered may have been because you threw it onto a bunch of other glass shards. The Superfest glass can still be easily shattered if force is applied quickly to a small portion of surface area, so pebbles, glass shards or even sand grains on the floor can pop it like a balloon if it lands directly on top of them at the wrong angle. It's still much more durable than normal glass.

Story time. I worked in a kitchen once and one day when in the dish room, I found a bowl I had never seen before, and on the bottom, it said "unbreakable". I was next to a coworker, and we were paid garbage, so no one really cared much, and I said "bet". So I took the bowl, and slammed it as hard as I could against the table, and it survived! We were both impressed, but because I have an IQ you could count with one hand, I decided to hit it again, and it survived. Impressed, but not enough, I hit it one more time, and that bowl shattered into a trillion tiny pieces, which cut my face and arm up with little tiny scratches.

Good times.

If a glass survives Nigel even for 5 minutes, I will pay good money for it.

The best thing about it was that they wanted to make glass that was 5x stronger than regular glass, but it turns out it was around 15x stronger. Peak of East German engineering.

Glass shattering and a maniacal laughter. Nile really has gone crazy for all those experiments he's conducted. 😵‍
