Fallout Lore: What Happened Inside Vault 12?

Vault-Tecā€™s most deliberately evil experiment took place in Falloutā€™s iconic Vault 12.

Vault 12 was marketed to potential residents as the ideal place to find safety and comfort during the apocalypse.

It was essentially a luxury vault; huge rooms and a state of the art water purification system.

But when the bombs started to drop in 2077, Vault 12ā€™s deliberate design flaw became horrifically obvious.

As Vaults all around the country closed their doors to protect their new inhabitants, Vault 12ā€™s ā€œmalfunctioned,ā€ forcing it to stay unsealed.

Vault-Tec had rigged the door to fail so they could study the mental and physical effects radiation would have on those living inside.

Almost everyone who survived was mutated into ghouls. Their skin was ravaged and some even lost their noses and ears.

When some of these survivors eventually left the vault in 2083, they were avoided by humans, who now saw them as grotesque monsters.

To avoid this sense of loneliness and isolation many ghouls chose to stay near Vault 12 and establish a settlement known as Necropolis.

I like to think overuse of radaway turns you into a ghoul.

most evil vault
Me: stares "the vault that got chem addicts thought a program to make them go clean by force and stay sober for X amount of years, so just after all success the overseer orders are to open a insane hidden room with enough drugs to make them all go to addiction again and start revolts inside."

I love how all these were vault tec experiments, but Vault Tec was never there to supervise the experiments.

When you watch the Fallout series it goes into depth of how Vault-Tec was and always has been a private business that used the end of the world as a marketing tool successfully conduct their many horrendous experiments

Having studied the lore of many of the vaultsā€¦Iā€™m not certain if there is such a thing as ā€œmost evil vaultā€. All of the most horrid ones were equally evil and awful. Horrendous what was done in them

I love how each vault was a different experiment. It's a brilliant concept.

Honestly that sounds like a pretty tame experiment by their standards

I wonder which vault studied all the other vaults, thats the one im most interested in.Assuming there was one, but it only makes sense if "studies" was the main reason for the other vaults.

Well, in reality, Fallout's Vault Tec vaults weren't originally planned to have any experiments in them. In an original game it was indeed meant to be just a malfunction in vault door systems and could've been working as a normal vault (like the one our character came from), but, again, had a huuuge malfunction in it. Things became more "funny" about the vaults in the 2nd Fallout, when they really became the places whre the experiments were made.

Wait what if the ghoul from the show rode off with his daughter into vault 12when the bombs went off and thatā€™s how he became a ghoul because his wife was supposed to be in a wealthy vault

This one I never understood. If the vault ever needed to be used, and the conditions for the experiment are correct, it also means there would be millions of test subject outside the vault doors as well. Why even construct a vault if you are going to make the experiment "But what if we didn't have a vault?"
