Alternative title: When the parent tries to force the coach to move up their kid before they’re ready

Shout out to my mom for giving me this idea! Thanks mommy 😁 (she deals with this a lot 😮‍

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of not having a neck injury.

I love the concept of "these percautions are why we havent had said dangerous outcome." It applies to literally everything.

THANK YOU!! My coaches never did this for me. I was bullied by my father into leveling up every year. I was NOT ready. Coach tried to modify my skills for my floor routine DURING the meet - a floor pass I’d literally never done. Physical injuries aside (which I had many over my career) the humiliation of being forced to compete above your competency is real and really fu¢ks with your confidence as a kid.

Rule of thumb: if you can’t do something consistently at least 6 weeks before a comp, don’t do it

"And have you had a kid get a severe head or neck injury?"

"No, and it's precisely BECAUSE I don't push them to do risky shit to satisfy their parent's ego."

I wish there were people like this who stood up for kids' mental health too.

Like, "no, I'm not letting your child do 5 AP classes at once" or "your child cannot practice an instrument for 4 hours straight every day" or "you can't force your child to have 2 jobs and 3 extracurriculars at the same time". Often that sort of disregard for wellbeing gets overlooked or outright dismissed.

This is why Simone being so open and public about taking a break for her mental health is SO IMPORTANT. Our society is too progress and performance focused when it comes to some things and we need to have compassion for people taking time and being careful with themselves. We only get this one body, this one life.

I don't think some people (or in this case parents) understand how fragile heads, neck and spine really are! It still doesn't take much to cause life long problems, even if you are lucky enough to not die or get paralyzed by the one wrong fall! I had a PE teacher once decide that we needed to do gymnastics lesson for one class and at the end everyone had to do back flip from a pommel horse onto a hard gym mat. Even though I did mine assisted, I was so scared to do it that I bailed mid flip and fell on my neck! Within couple hours from that, my right arm had gone completely numb. Thankfully, I only had gotten a nerve stuck and it wasn't too bad, but according to the er staff that could have ended so much worse!

And you KNOW the parent explains the gym switch as “They just didn’t believe you could do it, sweetheart”

So, as a high school teacher I watch these same parents push their kids into AP Bio and AP Chem classes way before the kid is actually ready for it. Then, these same parents get furious when their kids can't keep up with the pace of the class. The number of these kids who end up hospitalized for psychiatric disorders is outrageous. I've seen far too many teens become suicidal over the years. Academics (and gymnastics) should be challenging, not fatal.

as a person who as a kid who quit on the spot when a coach pushed them beyond their skill level thank you. i was far above my age group and they brought in an olympic coach for me to train with once a week and he decided that he wasnt going to move the beam away from the others (small gym so when the beams wernt in use they were all pushed to one wall so we could use the floor) and i slipped trying to do a routine and fell smacking my head like a ping pong ball off the two beams when he told me i was fine and to get back on the beam i quit on the spot and walked out

The number of parents who want different children than the ones they've actually got always amazes me. I've fortunately never had one who was prepared to risk their child's serious physical injury or death, just their emotional health and education, usually by refusing to allow assessments for things like dyslexia or autism because "I don't want them to be different to thrir friends".
