The Brawn Family Foundation River Lodge features a training wall where our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team can easily facilitate training with our bevy of North American River otters. All the animals in our care have the option to participate in voluntary training, which helps them get comfortable with their care teams and prepare them for different health procedures, such as weight checks and injection training. Special snacks help to foster an animal’s willingness to participate in training! 😋
Our Animal Care Supervisor, Jax, and Animal Care Technician, Stephanie, initiated target training with our female otters, mom ‘Kate’ and her offspring, ‘Meadow’. The otters were eager to participate and received their favourite fishy treats for touching their noses to the target ball. Each otter in our care has a piece of coloured felt that they are also trained to identify with, meaning more treats if their touch their corresponding piece of felt! 🐟
