Sounded like the starter was hesitating, i’d be looking at the starter and alternator first.

If its not that do a compression test on each cylinder if its fine then it could be bad Ignition coils or spark plugs

I would start with plugs and a air filter if it hasn’t been serviced in a long time i also think you have a bad coil or two
