In the Army we use wide mouth Nalgenes during cold weather training and carry them upside down. They'll freeze from the top down, and then if the opening of your water bottle does freeze, the wide mouth is big enough you can smash through to your water with a knife.

My Nalgene has been through war over the past 12 years, it’s basically my camping partner and you can pry it from my cold dead hands

Reasons to stick with the Nalgene over a smart water bottle

- single use plastics aren’t designed to be re-used like the name implies. As to how detrimental that is for your health is still unknown but I’m guessing it can’t be good for you

- you can’t do the warm water bottle trick with single use plastic bottles

- using a new new water bottle every trip creates more waste that’ll just end up in the landfill

When the difference in carry weight between the two is that small I think a reusable bottle is the right choice

Nalgene bottles are useful for making "hot water bottles"- so keep one, particularly for cold weather camping.

Since tyvek shrinks when you wash it, I’d recommend washing it and THEN cutting it. Old sewing/fabric tip I learned from my mom 😊

A 1L empty Smart Water bottle weighs 1.2 oz vs the 32 oz Nalgene Wide Mouth Ultralite Bottle that weighs 3.75 oz. I prefer a Nalgene because it has so many more uses than a single use bottle. It's easier to fill a wide mouth Nalgene when using a camp faucet for example. You can use it to warm up yourself and/or the sleeping bag. You can cook in them if needed, like overnight oats or ramen. You can also use them to store things inside. I lost a smart water bottle cap while backpacking once, not a good situation. If you want to use a Sawyer squeeze, then there are various small, 3rd parties that make a 63mm to 28mm adapter.

Been using tyvek for ground cloths and even tarps since the mid 90's when my dad's friend mentioned he had a bunch left over from a job. Works great, sounds like a tin roof in the rain, and a small square makes a great butt protector when you gotta sit somewhere wet.

Love Tyvek. Makes a great tent door mat too for shoes etc.

If you're camping solo, just bring an empty bottle with you for your tent, fellas. Kneeling upright in your sleeping bag for 30- 45 seconds beats crawling out of the tent every time you gotta do a number one. Mind you, I drink a lot of juice...😅

Tyvek scraps from construction lumber board wraps cut to approx. size

Maybe drape tarp over tent with no

Tyvek + a tarp is a super cheap and lightweight backpacking shelter

If you don’t wanna use plastic bags I’d highly recommend gore Tex socks. Your feet won’t be sliding around and get all humid and nasty

I put two large crockpot liner bags. I've used them for my feet, Ive used them to cook, Ive used them for hygiene (carry out necessity), and Ive used them to carry and protect items.

Correct me if I’m off base here but couldn’t I just get a good size Tyvek sheet and use that as my tarp?

Grocery bags? They still make those archaic things?
