島尻地区では旧暦9月上旬、仮面をつけて全身に泥を塗り、シイノキカズラの蔓草を巻きつけた3体の仮装神が出現します。パーントゥは厄払いの神として、泥をぬりつけることで、新築の家のお祓いや子供の無病息災を祈願します。ンマリガー（産まれ井戸）と呼ばれる井戸の底の泥を身に付けて奇声を発しながら各家を回ります。誰かれかまわず泥をなすりつける姿に、子供たちや観光客は悲鳴と笑い声を上げながら逃げ回ります。
