For dust reasons yes but for cooling it definitely does benefit having the cover removed.
There are 2 small notches in the plastic on the side of the SSD bay at the back to allow air to 'escape' from one side of the lid towards the fan. The fan creates the negative pressure drawing away from the bay, not the metal lid.
If you remove the cover, then the air isn't limited to 'escaping' from the small notches and can now leave much easier and be drawn away much faster by the fan. In PCs, the SSDs are never covered up because they are designed to have air passed directly on top of them through the case, that's literally how heatsinks work. The black vents at the front of the PS5 extend directly in front of the bay meaning cool air drawn in from the outside of the console can pass straight across the top of the SSD heatsink and cool the SSD directly as designed, instead of the metal lid.
All you are doing by keeping the lid on is bottlenecking the draw of warm air from the bay and stopping cooler external air from directly contacting the SSD/Heatsink. Any dust buildup can be cleaned just as quick as everything else, so it doesn't matter.

Installation is super easy. I'm the type to not do this kind of stuff because I'm paranoid about fucking it up, but it's incredibly easy and quick. 5-10 minutes max. I got the 2TB SSD and it's well worth it.
