5 Fun Facts About The Origins of Robocop (1987):

5. Robocop owes its existence to the spinners from Blade Runner. Late one night on set, screenwriter Edward Neumeier found himself looking at one and imagined a robot standing next to it. The basic premise and the title quickly followed.

4. Neumeier wasn’t actually employed by the producers of Blade Runner, but snuck onto set. So many people were there that nobody knew who was working and who wasn’t, so he secretly embedded himself in the art department making soggy newspapers for the streets.

3. His actual job at the time was working as a script reader for Warner Bros. It was because of this that he had access to the studio backlot and the Blade Runner set in the first place.

2. Another film Robocop owes its life to is Risky Business. As a script reader, Neumeier wrote a glowing 18-page report on it. When it became a hit, he was promoted to an executive.

1. Neumeier lied to the studio to get ten days off. He used that time to write Robocop’s first act, but as far as they knew, his grandfather had just died. They sent him their condolences and flowers.
