This technique has been used primarily in the Pop genre for a long time, but it is fun and inspiring to hear it implemented in heavy music with gritty vocals. It sounds so different in this context, I've given it a unique name :)
They didn't invent it, but they really use it well!

I do this all the time in my music. I use FL Studio which streamlines the whole process cuz 1) it has piano roll built in so no need for an organic keyboard and 2) this whole entire feature is built into the sampling system in the DAW. Just shorten the sample to the loudest part only, set the piano roll to loop the sound as long as the note is held, and hand-draw any melody you want. last time I used it, I cranked up the gain on my interface, threw some distortion on the line in channel, touched my guitar cable (causing the loud feedback buzz that every guitarist knows by ear), sampled it and looped it, used a tuner to find the pitch, routed that pitch to the piano roll, went down an octave and used it as a bass synth. 🤓
