I have a problem with it. This is at a much smaller scale than with Levi’s, but a brand that is classically associated with a country of origin and then up and leaves for a cheaper place of manufacture, can only be seen as doing so for profit margins. This almost always results in a loss of quality

Thought experiment: if this hoodie said Made in Japan and it was actually made in China, would you have noticed (based on construction, details, etc)? If not, then wouldn’t the incentive for them would be to lie to not have to worry about the blowback? It’s like a parent punishing kids for underage drinking, staying out too late, etc: the kid doesn’t learn to not do these things, they just get better at hiding them.

Doesn't feel right to me. Whether explicit or not, brands like Studio D'Artisan trade on the Japanese quality clothing trend. They should be super explicit that this is made elsewhere regardless of whether it's as good as Japanese made garments or not. As an aside, I just took delivery of a new double heavycrewneck in Khaki from Wonderlooper. Very happy with that and very much a made in Japan product. Of interest, what do SDA charge for these because if it is comparable to Wonderlooper, I'd regretfully say time to move on from SDA.
Regretfully because I have (japan made) t shirts, sweater and Henley from the brand that I really like

Some people avoid Made In China for ethical or political reasons.
Also, for everyone commenting "well if the quality is still the same, then who cares?": The quality will be the same at first and then will drop off a cliff. If SDA knows they can charge the same for good quality MIC as MIJ, then they'll soon figure out that they can charge that same amount for mid quality MIC. Let's not go down that road.

Those of us that buy Japanese Denim and the associated clothing that these brands make are a very niche group of people. I buy MIJ and accept the price because they are high quality AND MIJ. If they are going to be made in China then for me, it loses the brand ethos and I wont buy. Would give me the same vibes as buying Levi's made in China line or Evisu, which I don't touch because its not MIJ.

So I love made in Japan clothes. That said, China is also capable of making excellent clothes to the same standard as in Japan. When shopping in Japan, most japanese brands are MIC, unless very proudly displayed as MIJ. Don't get me wrong, I always buy MIJ when I can, but I have a few MIC and made in Vietnam pieces that are every bit as nice as my MIJ pieces.
