Lanolin, traditionally used for nipple care in breastfeeding mothers, has recently fallen out of favor due to increasing awareness of its allergenic potential. In 2023, the American Contact Dermatitis Society named lanolin the “Allergen of the Year” due to its ability to cause contact dermatitis, especially among people with compromised skin barriers, such as those with eczema, leg ulcers, or chronic dermatitis.
While lanolin has long been valued for its moisturizing and wound-healing properties, it can trigger allergic reactions, including redness, itching, and inflammation, particularly in individuals who use it regularly. This is due to certain components in lanolin, such as lanolin alcohols, which are known to be sensitizers. Even highly purified forms of lanolin can still cause allergic responses, making it risky for sensitive skin.
Alternatives to lanolin, like plain coconut or extra virgin olive oil, are now recommended. These alternatives provide similar moisturizing benefits without the risk of allergic reactions, making them safer options for breastfeeding mothers and others with sensitive skin
