Colt is a badass! I had the same realization with all of the Andy Wallace mixes with the kick & snare.

I think it’s massively important to pay attention to the legends but have your own method that you embrace and direction to follow. We tend to deify them but these legends we are all chasing did exactly what they felt would work best for the mix and you should too.

Myself and another engineer were talking about that at lunch a few weeks ago, how every rock band that we hear has pretty much 1 of 3 kick and snare sounds, and we both can recognize when it's a CLA Slate sample, or GGD - everything sounds the same.

The thing with drum sounds is there’s only so much you can do. Trying to chase some mythical "signature” drum sound will only have diminishing returns where you can get to a point where it doesn’t even sound like a normal kick or snare. Even if you were to stumble upon something that sounds remotely unique and you use it all the time, yeah it could become your "signature” sound, but now you’re putting yourself in a new box of your own and are limited. Like trying to put that sound in a rock, metal, hip hop or whatever context that you’re doing it might not fit. You’ve got to fit what you’re doing into the big picture on a track by track basis. Some times plain vanilla is the flavor that’s needed.

Individuality is key live the dream brother and carve your own sound.

You can find more recent CLA mixes done without any drum samples and they sound great. He makes live snares sound very fat

Nothing wrong with copy / paste. Getting the drums right lays the groundwork for the rest of the mix.

I think you can confidently say you re a successful mixer when people know you for your sound. So, i would guess its a compliment to CLA.

But i get colts point, they are human and i think he realized they are not some mythical creatures who know something we cannot achieve

Nah F waves and who cares about Chris lord Alge. Stock plugins for the win baby! Waves capitalizes on the newbies that just want their mixes to sound good and trap them with pretty 3rd party plugins and CLA works hand and hand with them. As far as mixing goes he def knows his craft but i dislike waves because they changed their stuff to subscription based and I lost hella money buying it before they switched. *hence I was the newbie
