There is nothing like spotting a bit of junk that could be used to make something else. Today the fashionable name is upcycling, but when I started making fishing lures I lived on a remote island where if you didn’t turn junk into fishing lures you did not get to fish. For this project I used a staircase spindle salvaged from a skip. It just looked like a classic pencil popper, the kind of thing used for stripers, bluefish and even big game species.

Tools and materials

40mm 1 ½”sq softwood staircase spindle

Wood Saw 22”, clamped to piece of wood so it saws a slot down the centre of spindle

1.2mm stainless steel wire

Jewellery pliers

Tongue depressors and 5 minute epoxy to fills slot

Forstner bit 20mm for weight hole

Lead free solder and soldering iron for weight

Cork and 5min epoxy to fill weight hole

8mm wood bit for drilling out eyes

8mm 3d lure eyes from amazon

Acrylic paint, white, fluorescent pink, black

Uv cure epoxy and curing station or the sun

Hi mate that looks great. My Daiwa black widow 12ft 3lb rod tip snapped a few weeks back. I trued to get it fixed but apparently they have discontinued so I was wondering if you would know where I can source one (not just the tip but half the whole rod) as I never got the broken bit back thx
