Wuh-oh. My book broke containment. Sorry about that.
Hi James! I'm the author of Vigor Mortis. It's a shame you didn't like it, but yeah, it is a book about people who do extremely horrible things and if that makes you unable to root for them I don't really blame you. One of the core questions of the series is whether or not they can become good people in spite of who they are and all they've done, and 'no' is an extremely valid answer to that question. I was sort of expecting the people who said no and hated the main characters to just stop reading the series, of course, but I guess that's just the curse of being a critic, eh?
I realize you're probably suffering a bit of burnout for chugging through a series you didn't like, but when the time rolls around to make a full video I'm happy to offer an interview if you're interested in any of the author's thoughts on your current regrets. I hope you enjoy the next book you read!

Both calling the Church evil and saying you're supposed to be rooting for Vita and Penelope feel like you've trudged through the entire story hating it from the start and thereby missed the entire point.
Vigor Mortis is a book about monsters becoming heroes and innocent victims becoming monsters. Lark's character arc exists as a reflection to Vita's and is meant to demonstrate how much of monster Vita becomes and Penta highlights how much of a monster Penelope is from the very start.
I personally found them compelling and was often rooting for them, but even if you don't, the interpretation that Vita and Penelope are intended to be "the good guys" and that the Church are intended to be "the bad guys" feels like you're begrudging the book for not writing out in plain words "authors note: Vita is a monster."
You're, of course, not obligated to like the bookâthere are definitely moments where I considered dropping it and I was an editor for the last three books, but... yeah.

I started this series and am enjoying it quite a bit! I wouldâve liked an example of what mightâve made her despicable, but Iâm guessing maybe the MC doesnât care about killing innocents at some point? It feels like one of the books where you just have fun watching someone get stronger and do crazy shit.
Also, if you donât like Vigor Mortis probably avoid Tenebroum. I think itâs a super fun read where the MC is an objectively evil undead. Youâre just watching him take over the world as best he can.

Considering both the author and an editor of this series (which I haven't personally read) have commented on this Short, I'm hoping James is willing to take what they've said into account when constructing his review. I could be wrong, but this may well be the first time an author has actually reached out to him about a book he plans to review; it'll be interesting to see how he handles that.

"Lesbian necromancers fighting against an evil church" sounds like a poor description of the Owl House
