I made a review on this a while back, and I really wanted to say good things because I tend to love everything about Jordan Peterson, and everything that he does. But I ended up really not connecting with his system for writing. I think what I want to do is share important things that I already know about with people and just do that in a concise, organized, and beautiful way. But what he is guiding you to do is to use writing as a tool for thinking. And I think that some people are very verbal and they like to talk things out and write things out. That is how they think; they think with words. But other people, like me…I am more swimming in abstract visuals, and the moment that I have to spend energy on trying to put things into words and verbalize them to other people, that takes me out of that special zone of thinking and meditation where I find revelations. So this method wasn’t a good fit for me, but I think if I ever pursued a PhD, I would refer to the guide for that. And if you don’t know, Jordan Peterson has some kind of record for publishing the most papers while still a student. So when he’s teaching you how to write, this is coming from somebody who has written a whole lot of research papers.
His method requires doing a lot of research on a very defined topic. I feel restricted, limited, bored, and like the writing in no longer worth my time. He says that this writing guide is supposed to help you mole over ideas to refine your opinions, more and more and more. He believes that writing is a reflection of clear thinking. I think that might be true for a lot of people and being able to communicate your ideas is good evidence that they’re well thought out. But sometimes he will already have the truth have knowledge and just want to share that so it’s not a guide for writing what you already know about.
