I did this on accident. Tried to prank my daughter when I said ā€œI can control the PS5 with the TV remote,ā€ but I didnā€™t actually believe I could. When I turned the TV on [I have a Sony TV as well], the PS5 came on, and I planned to use the controller behind my backā€¦but the remote actually worked and shocked even me.

As long as you have a TV that supports HDMI CEC, this totally works.

It also works on the PS3 and PS4.

In fact on PS3 the TV remote can be recognized as a "dualshock 3" controller, perfect for any game that had trophies tied to local multiplayer and if you needed another controller.

Also I used to play Tetris HD with the TV remote, lol. šŸ˜‚

Yep, while this has been like that since PS4, the only thing I hate is that, if you donā€™t change the input on the TV after you turned off the PS5, if another person turns On the TV, it will also turn on the PS5. And in my case when that happened, I wasnā€™t there and they just changed the input and let the PS5 on until it turned off automatically due to power saving setup.

Also can confirm. If you hit the power button on your TV remote, you can put the PS5 in rest mode.

No way man! I was just about to buy a PS5 remote! Never even thought of this! And we got like three Sony TV remotes around the house so this was an epic trick! You just earned a sub man!

"If you build it, they will come. "

I've always used the controller, so the media remote was never going to enter this household.

However, this video was very eye-opening. Thank you for enlightening us.

I wanted to look this up because of this feature and thought our new remotes would work on the PS5. I didn't realize Sony meant this feature for their PS remote. Thanks mate, appreciate the updates for the PS5.

The PS5 remote looks pretty slick, though. You can't deny it.

HDMI Link was more of a burden than it was helpful for me so I turned it off.

My streaming services are on the main screen of my smart tv so if I want to stream then I'll use that since it's the quickest way to access them. With HDMI Link turned on, my tv would turn on my PS5 and switch the hdmi input over to my PS5. It created more steps for me to undo than what was necessary.

Apart from the hamburger menu function (three dots button), PS button or quick access buttons for streaming (Disney+, Netflix, Spotify, YT), I'd totally agree.

Besides, I think my media remote needs fixing, my PS5 keeps turning on by itself until I remove the media remote's batteries. May or may not be the cause, but only thing I can think of atm. Definitely not HDMI Device Link's fault.

It's a good feature If you don't have other systems connected to the TV because once you remotely turn on another system that turns on that same TV it'll turn on your PS5 as well. It's basically like having all your systems talk to each other through the TV every time you turn them on or off.

I got one because I couldnā€™t close apps, use the microphone and I couldnā€™t shut off the ps5 easily with my tv remote. I also like the buttons for streaming and the play/fast forward/rewind buttons. It makes things very easy and better than a tv remote could ever be.
