Heck, when I was in the Army in early 1980s, we got Vietnam era (1965-70) rations in metal cans regularly, and not in great shape. We were simply TOLD "eat it" unless the cans were bulging.

In 2006, I was fishing with my dad and started feeling bad. Pops said I needed some salt and rehydration, so he pulled out a MRE from the 80s out from under the seat of that boat. Had me eat the contents and drink plenty of water. Made me feel better. The dehydrated fruit cocktail bar was awesome.
