There are many different methods that trainers use when a dog breaks a place command.

To be clear about what I’m referring to, It’s when a dog gets off the place cot without being invited off.

For me, there are two main ways I’ll deal with that and which method I use highly depends on the dog and the owner’s needs.

Method 1 - Simply ask the dog to get back on. Everytime the dog gets off, let them. Give them the opportunity to make the mistake that way you have the opportunity to reinforce the place command. Eventually you won’t have to use the leash to direct them back on the place bed.

Method 2 - Before your dog gets off, you use your body to apply spatial or psychological pressure in order to correct them and get them back onto the place bed. Eventually what happens is as soon as they get up and you come forward they will correct themselves and stay on.

In both methods I will say “Yes” and “No” so that we can further establish what I do want vs what I don’t want.

I find both methods to work excellently and it really depends on the owner and dog’s specific situation as to which method I recommend.

There’s no “right” way! This is just how I do it.
