Yes in normal time(time of the prophete sav )there is no sunnis, shias… etc but there is a hadith of the prophete sav where he tell us that there will be a time the din will be divided in 73 part, 72 part will be false and 1 part true, the true part is those who obey the kuran and follow the sunna

When Shah Ismail came to power in Iran he forced all his people to become Shia or face death. At the time he was expanding rapidly into the Middle East, and if Selim didn’t defeat him at Chaldiran Sunni Islam wouldn’t exist there today.
