In playing around with different types of wood I tried some birch but I had the blade set a little light so the wood got hot as it was burnished by the polished exit hole. This led to a very interesting discovery, the shaft lost it's temper, it was plastic. You could bend it in a U and it would stay there. Obviously not good for arrow shafts but is a possibility for interesting crafting possibilities.

I would make shafts 6 feet long using guides to prevent it from vibrating. I would cut the end rather than back it out which tended to score the shaft.
