I will do a tiny bit of roll play, I just joined a game where it's RP heavy. It makes me super uncomfortable. However, what i end up doing is create humor wherever I can to get by. It looks like I'm roleplaying and I don't feel uncomfortable with the amount of cringe I feel.

After character creation and zero session, but before the campaign starts, I do a special type of character sessionI called a 'Prelude.' I ask them a bunch of questions about their character, their history, what they believe, etc., and then we roleplay through 4-5 vignettes, touching on the character's history, from early childhood all the way to when they gained independence.
This method has never failed to connect the player to there newly minted character and to the campaign world, so when it's time to roleplay, they're not drawing a blank, they have memories as their character, they have a past with the character, and the roleplaying naturally emerges from this connection.

Start easing them in, asking for their idea on the situation they are in. Ask how they are feeling about it. In combat ask them how to describe their action. Etc...

I love this kind of roleplay as well. People are usually surprised by how backstories just sort of build themselves as soon as someone asks them a leading question.
