“We are not in the business of being quick and wrong. It takes time to conceive a building,” says Mat Hinds. If architects are unable to put enough effort into the project and do the job properly due to fee constraints, it is ultimately a waste of the client's time and money.
In a society that demands immediate results, he and his team manage to maintain their pace by charging what they believe their work is worth, and clients agree to this value-based pricing.
For him, the transactional nature of the building industry is gross (he mentioned how one of their early projects was sold at a significant profit partly because it was designed by them) and he says that is not where his focus needs to be, but at the same time, they need to be able to work properly. His main focus remains on delivering high-quality architecture rather than getting caught up in the financial transactions.
Mat Hinds is a Founding Director of Taylor and Hinds Architects in Hobart, Tasmania, with partner Poppy Taylor. Since its foundation in 2013, Taylor and Hinds has established a national and international reputation for a body of work that is strategic, rigorous, and experientially enriching.
