The Belgian Royal Question (or "Koningskwestie" in Dutch) emerged as a significant political crisis in Belgium after World War II. At the heart of the issue was the role of King Leopold III during the war. While Belgium was under German occupation, King Leopold III remained in the country, a decision that sparked controversy and divided public opinion. After the war, his controversial actions led to widespread public protests and calls for his abdication.

The crisis culminated in 1950 when a referendum was held to decide the king's fate. The Belgian people voted against King Leopold's return, leading to his abdication in favor of his son, King Baudouin. This event marked a pivotal moment in Belgian history, as it highlighted the importance of public sentiment in shaping the country's political landscape. It also resulted in changes to the Belgian constitution, which reduced the monarch's political powers, making the monarchy more symbolic and ceremonial.

Correction: the Belgians voted in majority FOR his return. However the socialist Walloons started a violent campaign of general strikes as soon as he did return in 1950. As civil war was threatened by the Walloons, Leopold - despite a majority voted in favour for him - decided to abdicated in favour of his son after several protesters were killed during protests. It resulted in a rift between Flanders and Wallonia.
