Join me as I navigate the impending varroa mite incursion in Australia. In this reflective video, I share my journey of acknowledging the mite's presence and making critical decisions for the future of my beekeeping.

From contemplating hive management to adapting beekeeping practices, I explore strategies to minimize the mite's impact.

Let's engage in an open discussion within the beekeeping community, exchanging ideas and concerns as we collectively shape our approach to this new challenge. Together, we can prepare for the varroa mite and safeguard the health of our bees.

We tried in New Zealand nothing stops it ..best treat with Oxalic acid strips all year round and stay on top of the levels and rest assured this is best than more stress ..all the best !

American keeper here. In a global economy the question is always when, not if. Which is why I am preparing for the Northern Hornet NOW, not when losses start. Aussie/NZ keepers may do well to study/follow experts on different continents for whom new exotic pests are endemic to learn how the locals handle the problem.

Good luck to all.

Your ability to deal with it will be largely dependant on A: the level of resistance to miticides and B: the ability of beekeepers to secure these miticides.
Amitraz, Fluvalinate, formic acid, oxalic acid, thymol…. Best get acquainted with all these.

But how did it get here? Don't we have strict controls over these things?

I’ve lost all 35 of my hives. None of which had the mites. They allowed hives to be moved for almond pollination. Greed over common sense. It’s out of control now
