XY plot in a nutshell: Kalos is too rotten, we have to keep our beauty together (the dude who lives in a utopic France), in short WE HAVE TO KILL EVERYONE BUT THE PEOPLE I LIKE!!! (Who are the only people doing anything bad in the game), the rival: you know maybe he has a point, maybe genocide isnt bad

Fun personal fact!: When I first played this game when I was 10, I didn’t comprehend what his motives were nor cared about him that much. He was basically an orange blob in my head. When he did his big rant underground, I thought he was saying “Pokémon will no longer exist” aka his goals was to make the world our world basically.
And i thought “why would anyone do that? Pokémon are great!”
I thought his goals as a kid were very complex, but boiled down to “I want to kill all Pokémon”, and that made me wish his goals were instead “I want to kill all people” because that made more sense I guess.
So much so that I made my own Pokémon villain who was a false nihilist wanting to end humanity and let Pokemon reign.
The writing was so bad that a child could be convinced of the opposite being true as his villain motives.

His reveal somehow worked for my preteen cousins and I can't comprehend how besides genuinely ignoring his existence.
This is the main reason why I call him Lysandlewood to mock his writing stupidity, although oh man did Rose do the same thing and outstupid him. At least USUM realized he's more of a total nut.
Also it's kill everyone except the people rich enough to pay the cult fee to be considered beautiful or get a usefulness pass from him alone. Kinda stupider.

If Lysandre's villian motivation was simply "This world is too peaceful and boring! I want chaos and destruction because that's exciting!", he would be a lot less flawed than what we actually got. Would it be cartoony? Probably, but it could work. But then again, all the characters would still look up to Lysandre so maybe I'm wrong.

One of the only props I'll give to the Ultra games is that they at least vaguely recognized what Lysandre actually was in-game and dropped any pretense of him having a point, and, intentionally or not (genuinely hard to tell with gamefreak, especially considering just how rushed they were/are in the 3D era), made a scathing skewering of Fascism by straight up making it canon that the USUM Lysandre won and killed all the billions of "undesirables"... And then he had to find a new enemy to fight because it solved nothing and he needed a new scapegoat before team flare collapsed in on itself.
Like, it is entirely something you have to read between the lines to see, that again, probably isn't intended, but the Fascist losing because they won is genuinely a deeper and more meaningful critique of the strongman ideology then most stories about how dumb and evil fascists are.
I would say i have my fingers crossed they do something with this perfect opportunity in Z-A, but i don't. Because they won't. So I'm not gonna set myself up for disappointment.

Gamefreak seems to be constantly divided between trying to do a subtle and relatively high concept villain, and then desperately making sure the 4 year olds in the audience understand the villain's deal and that he's evil and feel smart for understanding it so you end up with shit like this
