I can't stand that everyone dunks on Team Yell because "Buuh they're not evil!" Nobody said they were trying to be.
"They're just annoying roadblocks!" As if that's a new problem.
"They don't do anything!" They show what Marnie has at stake in the League in a fun way and have a pretty fair amount of screentime for that purpose.

The villain team role and the league role are usually two completely separate arcs that never meet or comment on each other. Even in Gen 5, it was a poorly-explained involvement. Gen 8 focusses wholly on the League, and rather than distract from it, Team Yell are a backdrop to one of the league competitors and don't step outside of that boundary, because they heighten the game's focus just by existing.

In my perfect world, Game Freak would focus on a high concept villain. But I'd much prefer they focus on Anything to their usual fare.

I struggle calling these guys villains. People are just calling them the 'evil team' of the game because 'Team' is in their name. They aren't.

Day in the life of a true brexi... I mean... Spikemuth geezer:
- Wake up
- Support Marnie
- Harass any competitor that isn't Marnie
_ Shill Marnie merch
_ Worship Marnie
- Make Marnie fancams
- Post about Marnie on social media
- Defend Marnie's honor in online flame wars
- Sleep

I think team yell really suffered from Gen 8's "Alola syndrome" where a lot of the core concepts of some of the cast were blatantly derivative of Gen 7's variants

in regards to team yell, despite the concept team yell has a feint odor of "lets do team skull again" in terms of the punk design and leaders build

does that mean theyre bad? honestly after getting past my biases. no. but i think these guys just didnt do enough notable stuff to really get out of guzmas shadow because as you said, the concept is amazing.

But would it have killed GameFreak to make more than 2 models for them? That’s what annoyed me. In 3D having some variation is much appreciated. I think it’s because they don’t have a uniform like other evil teams. It’s more obvious that they’re all the same fat guy and punk girl.
Marnie is awesome so I get their reasons.

Team Yell are the most charming antagonists in Pokemon in so long I swear to god. Their love for Marnie is so endearing and the bits and pieces where their masks slip and they talk about their kids or having back pain just makes it impossible to be mad at their antics.

I love that they're a just close-knit blue collar community standing up to PokeCapitalism leaving them behind by the only means they have because their gym leader refuses to give in to the cultural demands from the Pokemon equivalent of Elon Musk(derogatory). It's such a middle-finger to the status quo established in the game and I love it so much for that because we rarely get that in Pokemon.

I saw a comment a while ago, I think it was on the Piers battle theme video on YouTube, where a guy had an idea on how to make team Yell relevant as an "evil" team :

Basically, since Piers became a gym leader, it became a thorn in Rose’s plans to trigger the Darkest Day again since Piers didn’t want to use Dynamax (or something, I don’t exactly recall). So, Rose cut the funding to Spikemuth and embargoed the city, reducing it to an extremely empoverished city, which is why it looks this way in the games. So, Marnie decided to take on the League to confront Rose and reveal his actions to the world, and Team Yell is basically the Spikemuth population trying to support Marnie in her goals in any way they can.

I never thought about them since I stopped playing after Gen7, but you know what? You right.
Their town is still just a corridor tho.

I’d probably feel the same if this game committed entirely to the tournament stuff, but as it is, S&S also have the whole “let’s raise the stakes to unreasonable proportions at the end” and so what thematic relevance they may have had is incredibly diminished.

It’s too bad that the person they support is less interesting than white bread personality wise

I don’t care what anyone says gamefreak making sword and shield’s villain team a group of Manchester United fans will forever be the greatest idea they ever had

I would agree with you if Sw/Sh had the story/mechanics RagnarokHybrid suggested.

If there was a mechanic where you built up an audience, fans, and overall fame. It would be FANTASTIC to have some sports loonies block your progress in the name of their favourite sports star.

Otherwise, Team Yell is just sort of a blur/blob that exists instead of a large branch requiring an HM.

I think they would have been better had team Skull not done the "evil team that isn't actually evil" literally the generation before so people see it as uninspired.

Another aspect is how irrelevant they are to the Plot, they are kinda just there.

Now for the gamefreak patented "cool concept, we're doing the bare minimum with it"

I feel like people were just looking for things to complain about in Sword and Shield, which led to people acting like a bunch of issues in SWSH are somehow new to the franchise instead of recurrent and led to people actively shitting on the few things it was doing properly.

I feel like the only thing everyone actually acknowledged was done great was the whole sports aesthetic they had going on, which makes it even weirder that the unserious villain team that perfectly fit into that theme was hated the most out of almost everything.

I still think I would prefer them to appear a bit more and it's kinda lame that they're usually just used as roadblocks for the player (even though out of all things to use as an invisible wall this is probably the best way they could go about it, second to not actually having the godamm wall)

Team Yell is annoying. Which is their job. They're supposed to be annoying, they're obnoxious fans. I just wish they weren't used so much as nonsensical walls or like, quite so out there if they're supposed to also be Gym Staff themselves. I wish the whole Spikemuth Not Having Gigantamax thing had been expanded on more. Also it being more of an actual town. There's potential in them, I wish it was taken further.

The encounter with them on Route 6 (Or 7? Not entirely sure) with the sleeping snake is one of my favourite moments in all Pokémon games tbh

@TeaIngyer

Team Yell suck because they have no narrative weight. Sword And Shield suffers from the low stakes of the previous and subsequent generation. It's mostly just chores for a majority of the game until the actual big stakes arrive near the end.
Even teams Land Smoocher and Ocean Hugger added some stakes to their story, despite how bland they are.
Team Yell is all flavoring and nothing to put it on, all frosting, no cake.
