It was in inhalers that amphetamines were first used. The Benzedrine inhalers was a metal tube that contained amphetamine as the active ingredient. People figured out that you could crack open the tube and eat a piece of the cotton or put in in your coffee and boom, this is how the speedy effects of amphetamine were discovered. It was popular among the beatnik crowd.
Eventually a pill called Benzedrine was formed.
The inhalers were eventually changed to contain propylhexadrine in the now Benzedrex inhalers, Vicks inhalers use L-Methamphetamine.
I actually own a couple of unopened old Benzedrine inhalers that I found in a box of antique dental equipment, one is a sample tube that contains 30 something milligrams of Amphetamine (a bit more than a 30mg Adderall) and the other was the regular tube, it contains 325mg of Amphetamine, so eating the whole cotton or even half was quite a bit of speed.

Soo a few years ago I had to get drug tested for a medication I was on. I never thought twice because I took it as prescribed and didn’t take anything else. Go in for my appt, after the test the doc gives me a look, and in other words tells me I’ve been taking mdma and meth. He was an old Korean guy with a very strong accent so he was hard to understand. I didn’t understand the first time around so I nodded and said mdma and meth were bad. Then he shows me the paper. I’m like… umm I’ve never taken either of those. He asked what I DO take, I told him for atleast half of the year I take Claritin/Zyrtec with Sudafed, and use Vicks nasal spray occasionally. He instantly knew that’s what caused the false positive. But it had me freaking out, thought maybe the tests got mixed up or something. Kinda weird how all of that stuff works 🤷🏾

Couple years ago my boss/friend gave me a drug test just because shit was wild at the time. Problem was it came up positive for meth and mdma and cocaine or something idk. I have my medical mj card and me and him smoked together regularly. He was like bouncing off the walls saying i knew it it all makes sense now. I was clean and knew that so his reaction pissed me the fuck off. The next morning we grabbed a fresh drug test and i passed all clean. What a weird week that was. Turned out he was actually using meth and i found out through him telling on himself trying to get me to sympathize with people who just take a piece of meth like a pill. Thats the kind of boss you pack up all your shit in the middle of the night and dip out. We haven't spoken since. I actually reached out last week to see if we could just squash the beef and he left me on read.

Pretty sure these inhalers have Propylhexedrine in them, NOT Methamphetamine. Very similar structures, but not that same.

Stereochemistry can completely change how a drug functions as well; my favorite example being methorphan. Dextromethorphan is used in cough syrups while levomethorphan is an opioid over 5 times stronger than morphine that has never been marketed.
