If you can't trust your lows, focus on the midrange, says @justincolletti.
It may be counterintuitive, but if you can't hear your lows properly, obsessing about them LESS rather than more is one of the keys to better sounds.

I listen on huge, high-end monitors, on a PA system, in the car, on the phone speakers, in earbuds, on headphones, and on a bluetooth speaker. Every different sound system accentuates different things, so I try to make it work on all of them whether a hifi system with a flat response down to 15Hz or phone speakers with nothing much under 200Hz. So I may have (had) a bad habit of not using reference recordings, but I spare no expense on reference systems.

I've never thought about it this way...this is great...balancing the mid range of the kick vs the mid range of the bass. Is it best to do this using EQ or compression??

Cross referencing is a great tool. I use old ipod earbuds with a 3.5mm jack connection. If the mix sounds great on them, particularly the midrange, then the final product translates to every other system 9/10 times
