The total should’ve been different so your lesson could be more clear otherwise, you could’ve just used 100 as a total to get your point across. The difference is ten percent. There’s no need for extra steps. In the real world, you use the least amount of steps possible. This is why people quit math after algebra

This is the opposite of distributing. For 954(.921-.821) you distribute the 954 to the .921 and the .821 not the other way around.
