Carl Ruggles' Angels for Muted Brass was originally designed as the second movement of a three-part symphony called Men and Angels. The dense harmony and soaring melodies call to mind the work of Ruggles' contemporaries like Charles Ives and Edgard Varèse, who conducted the premiere in 1922. Enjoy this stellar performance by the NWS Fellows from the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when a work so stark and haunting aptly depicted the feelings we all experienced in that moment.
