I was raised by a father for whom english was his second language his first was German. All the while living in North Dakota. The day came when we moved from ND to CA. Although I spoke no German myself I had learned the ND tongue with a heavy dose of German accent. Everyone asked what nationality I was, the confused look I got when I said I only know English and have lived here my whole life.

Back in the '80s I had a German girlfriend. When I tried out what little high school German I remembered, she said I had an American accent. I had a hard time figuring that out.
