🌕 The True Essence of Karva Chauth: Karkachaturthi Vrat 🌕

In recent times, Karva Chauth has been glorified by Bollywood, transforming it into a romanticized ritual where women fast for their husband's long life, ending the day by seeing his face through a sieve in front of the moon. This is not mentioned in our scriptures. The true essence of this vrat, rooted in Sanatana Dharma, is quite different.

According to the Vamana Purana, it’s called Karka-chaturthi Vrat as it is on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi. It is observed not just for the husband’s wellbeing, but for the Saubhagya (prosperity and fortune) of the woman herself. It is a sacred ritual where Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Kartikeya, and Soma (the Moon) are worshipped for the woman’s auspiciousness and lifelong happiness.

The fasting, known as Upvas, is performed to ensure a life filled with harmony, love, and peace within the marriage. The offering of Karva (laddus) to Mother Parvati is a prayer for an eternal bond with her husband, a peaceful relationship, and a happy life together.

How is this vrata observed?
The woman wakes up early. Does fasting in the day. Worships the deities mentioned above, with the shloka
“Namah shivaayai sharvaanyai, saubhaagyam santatim shubhaam.
Prayaccha bhakti-yuktaanaam, naariinaam hara-vallabhe” which means, O Parvati(Shivaa, sharvani), please bless me who is devoted to you, with saubhagya and good children, O Hara-vallabhe(Who is dear to Shiva).

13 Laddus, 1 lota, 1 vastra and 1 special laddu are given to the Parents of the husband. Dakshina is given to Brahmana who helps her to do the pooja. Argyhya or water is offered to the moon in the evening & then she has the food in the evening.

Let’s cherish and understand the deeper spiritual significance of this vrat, which celebrates the strength and fortune of women.
