On the chilly evening of January 28, 1980, the US Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn collided with the tanker Capricorn, unleashing a tragedy that shook the nation. The cutter, renowned for its service from World War II to peace-time duties, was navigating Tampa Bay, Florida, when disaster struck. A chain of miscommunications and navigational errors led to a rapid capsizing of the vessel, claiming the lives of 23 brave crew members. Many were new to the ship, unprepared for the sudden calamity. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Coast Guard was spurred into action, leading to sweeping policy changes that would transform their operations. Enhanced training regimes, stricter physical fitness standards, and more robust safety measures were instituted to prevent future losses.
