Queen Victoria was walking by the river with one of her ministers. She noticed uniform pieces of paper floating in it. They were sheets of early style toilet paper. Her Minister told her they were little notices reading “No swimming”

Funny how he gave his efforts to help an entire city from a putrid smell, and his prize was basically being told by the court he was a certified good boy.

The engineer in question deliberately made the sewer system twice the diameter as originally planned, saying "well, we're only going to do this once, and theres always the unforseen". Without this, the system still in use today would have overflowed in the 1960s

Humans settle near fresh water for a reason, so it has always been wild to me how eventually they will totally destroy and pollute said body of water. Like, I dont even trust the fish in my locale. Very sad.

The river Thames might be significantly cleaner now than back then, but a lot of the coasts of the UK are absolutely filthy due to sewage being dumped straight into the ocean.

The stench was so vile and grotesque some people just randomly fainted on the street and died hitting their head.

Why people ever thought to use rivers, lakes, ponds and oceans as a trash can is beyond me. It seems like common sense to not pollute your water sources.

"IS THAT THE STINK OF 87"

This undersells it. He actually future proofed the design someways, he expected the city to grow larger and alloted for extra capacity.

Truly a brilliant man.

And it still is. In fact, they found a decomposing camel in it just the other day. Where did it come from? No one knows.

Ohh that's why the rivers in Fallout:London are so heavily irradiated they practically kill you immediately if you try to swim

Haha. I bet that heatwave really did them in. There is nothing worse than a turd baking in the sun.

150+ years later and London is STILL a cesspool đŸ€Ł

That sewer was built at a time when London’s population was like 2 Million residents, and the sewer was built with capacity for 4 Million residents’ movements. That was some good thinking on the designer, but unfortunately, it had to be added onto as the city now has a population of like 10+ million.

One of my favorite aspects of this story was how he doubled the original diameter of the sewers. His reasoning, "we're only doing this once, so let's make sure we have this in place for centuries."

And he was right, since the original diameter of the sewer system works have been overwhelmed by the 60s, iirc

Truly impressive that Mr. Bazalgette made it to the point that the sewer is still working to this day in age.
