Also, color balance is important.
If you're doing a complementary pallette, choose the main color and the accent color. The main color is going to cover most of your character, and the accent color is going to be in the most important parts (aka the ones you want to drag attention to).
Play around and see how switching main and accent can change the feel of your character too, it's pretty interesting.
