In my mind I thought the terminids were characteristically like the tyranids/ocrs, the automatons were like the necrons/men of iron, and the Illuminators are sort of like the Eldar/Tau.

First of all Warhammer 40k is highly inspired by Dune saga (the books from 1965). You need to go back to 1950's sci-fi novels to find the original inspirations of stories like Heldrivers 2.

Yes we get we're not supposed to glorify it, media/entertainment is supposed to be an escape from reality.
If we were supposed to glorify it, it's going to be a very boring game. Same reason games like War of Rights are fun(but only if you're confederate.)
