Fun fact, the captchas don't actually care if you get all of whatever it's asking for. They care about how your mouse moves to find them. A robot would typically go in a straight, even line, while a human would jitter/move at uneven speeds.

As several people have pointed out: Captchas help train AI by throwing in unknown images and comparing them with known images. They make you, the human, do the work. There are some "human" checks in there; like how you move your mouse, your typing cadence (banks use this one alot), how fast it takes you to solve. But if you are frustrated you got it wrong; you probably didn't. They are milking you for free training.
