Plateau constructs what he called a ‘Phenakistoscope’ (or Phenakistiscope). It consisted of a series of drawings or painted pictures of figures in successive steps of motion. The disk provided a one second glimpse into the future of cinematography.
The ‘Phenakistoscope’ had two disks with the inner disk holding the pictures in order on the rim, and the outside disk which the viewer looked through.
The outer disks had blackened slits to ensure a constant clear frame and to shield unwanted light. 30
