Discussing personal issues with a parent, especially a mother, can be a daunting task for many of us. It's natural to feel that way, considering the role they play in our lives. But what's surprising is that even as adults, we often struggle to open up to our moms about our problems.
A lot of us also struggle with the feeling that our moms won't understand what we're going through. We might think that they're from a different generation, that they won't get our struggles, or that they'll just dismiss our concerns as insignificant. This lack of trust in our mom's understanding can make it difficult for us to open up about our problems. Furthermore, we might feel embarrassed about what we're going through, whether it's a personal issue, a mistake we've made, or something we're ashamed of.
Emotional and psychological factors also play a significant role in our reluctance to discuss our problems with our moms. According to a study, 75% of adults still seek their mother's approval, even if they don't realize it. This need for approval can make us hesitant to share our struggles, fearing that our moms will be disappointed in us. In addition, past experiences can also shape our behavior. If we've been shut down or dismissed in the past when trying to share our feelings, we might become hesitant to do so again.
Moreover, our own emotional baggage can also hold us back. Unresolved feelings of guilt, shame, or anxiety can make it difficult for us to confront our moms about our problems. We might also feel that we're a failure or that we're not good enough, which can further exacerbate the issue. However, it's essential to recognize that these feelings are normal and that our moms are capable of understanding and relating to them.
But here's the thing: our moms want to help us. They want to support us and be there for us, even if we're adults. In fact, sharing our problems with our moms can actually strengthen our relationship with them. It can create a deeper sense of trust and understanding, allowing us to build a more authentic connection with them.
